Answer

Risk factors for type 2 diabetes include genetic factors, age and ethnicity. However, being overweight or obese (BMI of 25kg/m2 or more) is the main modifiable risk factor. A large number of cases of Type 2 Diabetes could be prevented or delayed by addressing being overweight or obese.

PHA invests circa £4million in a number of obesity prevention programmes that align to diabetes prevention. Work continues with a range of other partners to promote activities that will encourage healthy lifestyles that contribute to obesity prevention.

The main programmes PHA commissioned and / or supported are grouped into three themes: healthy eating, weight management, and physical activity. Campaigns, leaflets and resources are also produced on these themes.
