Answer
There is no separate statutory registration of sonographers in the United Kingdom (UK) and ‘sonographer’ is not a protected title.
In practice, sonographers come from a background of midwifery or radiography. Those sonographers who are midwives will be required to hold a midwifery qualification recognised in the UK and must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Those who are radiographers will require a professional radiography qualification recognised in the UK and must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
Medical staff undertaking ultrasound procedures are registered with General Medical Council (GMC).
