Answer
Under the General Surgery Network remit, Robotic Assisted Surgery has been identified as a key priority to be taken forward.
Work is underway with key stakeholders to develop a regional pan specialism implementation plan for Northern Ireland. Evidence and data are currently being gathered to support this work through a number of workshops held. In addition to Urology, other specialisms of Gynaecology, Colorectal and Thoracic surgery are being considered.
Significant investment will be required to fully implement regional access to robotic assisted surgery over a phased timeframe. Investment will be required for the robotic platform as well as the revenue costs. However, key drivers for change include sustainability of services; workforce recruitment and retention; training and development; clinical advantages; and better patient outcomes.
