Answer

Robotic Assisted Surgery has been identified through the General Surgery Network as part of the Review of General Surgery within Northern Ireland. Worked has commenced to look at what the requirements would be, and to discuss how this could support the workforce and population.

My officials are leading these discussions with Trust colleagues at present. A sub group has been established and preparation work commenced to consider the development of a regional, phased, pan specialism plan for Robotic Assisted Surgery within Northern Ireland.

There is agreement across the Trusts of the need for a regional pan specialism approach, which is co-produced and agreed with clinicians and other stakeholders. The specialism of gynaecology is one service in a state of readiness to proceed.

There are challenges and barriers to implement Robotic Assisted Surgery into NI, given the current financial position and the significant investment required. Nevertheless, I have asked my officials to continue to proceed with this work to ensure Northern Ireland maintains at pace with other nations and an agreed regional direction is set.
