Answer
Road markings serve a very important function in conveying information and requirements about the road network and poorly maintained road markings can have a negative impact on road safety. With this in mind, my officials undertake regular routine maintenance inspections of all roads during which all defects, including defective signs and road markings, are noted.
Road markings are not replaced within a routine/specific time frame, rather when a proportion of the marked area is found to be ineffective or worn away. Repairs are prioritised to concentrate on regulatory road markings, such as stop lines, and those longitudinal lines necessary for continued road safety.
Officials are currently considering a schedule of works that will include locations in the Newtownabbey area which require refreshment. Works to refresh the road markings identified as part of this schedule will commence in June 2026.
