Answer

My Department is currently progressing a number of Active Travel projects that will improve connectivity for the Sailortown area of North Belfast.

The Sailortown Pedestrian and Cycle Improvement Scheme will link to the Belfast Cycling Network and aims to provide new high quality active travel infrastructure connecting York Street Train Station, Ulster University and the Cathedral Quarter via Dock Street, Corporation Street and Great Patrick Street. Detailed design is ongoing following positive initial public engagement in October 2025, and my Department plans to commence the statutory process required to legislate the new cycle route later this year, once the design has been suitably developed.

My Department is also supporting Belfast City Council (BCC) and Belfast Harbour Commissioners (BHC) in the development of the proposed Sailortown/Titanic Quarter bridge project across the River Lagan. Through the 2024-25 Greenway and Active Travel Capital Grant Funding round, my department allocated £0.3m to BCC to progress the project to RIBA Stage 2 (Concept Design). This phase is now substantially complete, and officials will continue to engage with project partners on opportunities to support the future development of the scheme.
