Answer

Road safety is a high priority for my Department, and we are committed to working proactively to make our roads safer and to address the needs of all road users. We are acutely aware that children and young people are amongst the most vulnerable groups using our roads, particularly around schools.

The Member will be aware that we met to discuss the pedestrian crossing at the Prince Charles Way Roundabout and I am pleased to advise that work is progressing well to deliver this proposed toucan crossing.

Officials have received the initial design from our traffic signals contractor, and consultation with the PSNI regarding the relocation of the 50mph speed limit to facilitate the crossing at this location has been completed. Subject to there being no objections, we anticipate its delivery within the current financial year.

The roundabout on Prince Charles Way is on the proposed priority Active Travel route from Mossley West to the Church Road, which will require a controlled crossing at the roundabout to provide connectivity to the primary school.

Traffic calming measures are also proposed on Ashgrove Road from the roundabout at Prince Charles Way to the Glebe Road. The scheme, currently in the design stages, will consist of a series of road humps, cushions or raised platforms. The type of feature will be dependent on the location of existing entrances and road infrastructure on Ashgrove Road.
